ESNEFT Local Population

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) is one of the Trusts that make up the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. ESNEFT is an integrated Acute and Community Trust serving 800,000 residents, including Ipswich and Colchester hospitals and community services in east Suffolk; we are the largest NHS organisation in the East of England.

We are also part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), which is the nation’s largest funder of health and care research. The NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) is comprised of 15 Local Clinical Research Networks and 30 Specialties across England, who coordinate and support the delivery of high-quality research, advancing knowledge and improving care for our patients. ESNEFT is part of the CRN Eastern local network:

 

  • 62,773 (Approx. 18%) of the Colchester and Tendring population in East Anglia are under 16 years of age (Colchester Borough Council, population mid-2018; Tendring Council, 2018).
  • There are approximately 351,000 (approx. 2.5%) children aged 0-17 with a learning disability in the UK (Mencap, 2020).
  • In Colchester and Tendring, this equates to approx. 1,569 children affected by an intellectual disability.
  • At Colchester Hospital the Community Paediatric service see on average 24 patients per month who are diagnosed with ASD (approximately 288 patients per year).

Clinical Research Network (CRN) within England

Within our Eastern region, ESNEFT was the second highest acute Trust for recruiting participants into portfolio adopted NIHR research studies (2019-2020).
